EIC - Using the Environment as an Integrating Context for Learning

Using the Environment as an Integrating Context (EIC) for improving student learning is based on research by the State Education and Environment Roundtable (SEER), which indicates that students do better on standardized tests when they learn by doing environment-based investigations in their own community. EIC teachers use six "best teaching practices."
In 2002 the Georgia State Board of Education approved the EIC Model to address the underperformance of K-12th grade students on standardized science measures. From 2002 - 2008 the Georgia Environmental Protection Division partnered with representatives from the University of Georgia, Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia, Georgia Department of Education, Captain Planet Foundation, and State Education and Environment Roundtable to coordinate the EIC program in Georgia.
