Advanced Training for Environmental Education in Georgia (ATEEG) is a nationally accredited, professional certification program for formal and non-formal educators based on the Guidelines for  Excellence from the North American Association for Environmental Education. The program is offered by EEA in partnership with the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia, and is implemented by a Certification Advisory Board. Learn why EE certification is important.

Program Details

ATEEG History
Certification Advisory Board Portal
The ATEEG program is comprised of three parts that provide participants instructional content, professional development, and independent work. Participants have three years to complete the program.

1. Core Courses
Core courses are offered yearly and more than once in a given year, based on demand.  Candidates must successfully complete each course and are encouraged to participate in all three workshops in the same year.

Each course runs in a hybrid format.  Participants complete online, asynchronous work first, then attend a 1-1.5 day in-person workshop with instructors at various locations across the state.

  • Core Course 1 - Foundations of EE: To develop foundations of environmental literacy based on ecology and professional principles.
  • Core Course 2 - Fostering Learning: To increase understanding of how to implement environmental education programs that foster learning.
  • Core Course 3 - Assessment and Evaluation: To increase participant's skills and knowledge associated with the program evaluation process that includes identifying outcomes, data collection methods, and data analysis.

2. Specialization Workshops
Specialization workshops are any professional development opportunity offered in the state that advances the  participant's content knowledge and skills. You may begin accruing the required 30 workshop hours after participating in your first core course.

3. Independent Study
Independent study is the culminating project that allows participants to apply their EE knowledge and skills to address an issue or area of concern of their choosing.  A candidate submits the IS project proposal after completing all three (3) core courses.
