The BVPI (Biophilic Values Profile Indicator) is a new tool for assessing environmental values. The concept of biophilia is based on E.O. Wilson's ideas about the innate tendency of people to connect with nature and other life forms. The BVPI is less than half the length of an earlier tool called the Kellert-Shorb Biophilic Values Indicator (KSBVI), yet retains the same level of validity and reliability.
The BVPI can be administered as a pre- and post-survey to examine differences in how people relate to the natural world before and after participation in outdoor and environmental education programs. This approach is important because environmental beliefs and values shape outdoor practices in culturally-distinctive ways, so individual participants will not share the same pre-existing environmental values and priorities.
