Rain gardens are shallow depressions that are planted with deep-rooted native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and/or small trees. When it rains, the gardens intercept water flowing from buildings, roads, pavement, parking lots, and lawns, causing the runoff to slow down, spread out, and soak into the ground. In the process, erosion is reduced and pollutants are filtered out.
