Environmental Education Alliance
ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Save the Date for EEA's Virtual 2021 Conference
Date: March 12-13, 2021
Location: Your place!
Picture
It's just around the corner! . . . Mark your calendars for EEA's virtual conference, March 12-13, 2021. We'll gather online for exciting workshops, short courses, and friendly, "cracker barrel" sessions. Want to become a facilitator for the Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental Education series? There will be a train-the-trainer workshop for that! Intrigued by concept of using your "JEDI heart" to incorporate justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in environmental education? There will be a workshop for that, too!

Call for Proposals: Open until January 15

Presenter proposals are being accepted through 11:59 p.m. January 15. We are open to all ideas, but particularly looking for sessions that focus on powerful practices developed during the pandemic that are likely to last; inspiring stories of schools, nature centers, or environmental education organizations that found innovative ways to adapt in the past year; lessons learned about making environmental education more culturally-responsive; and schoolyard STEM projects that engage kids and communities in solving real-world problems. The formats available for presentations are:
  • One- and two-hour short courses
    • Interactive or traditional presentation style; break-out rooms available
    • 20-minute, "cracker barrel" discussion sessions repeated twice, for different small groups
      • Pick a short topic on which you'd like to share some information - say, a community science project that you've successfully implemented. Spend 5 minutes telling about your experience and 15 minutes fielding questions and facilitating discussion.
If you are interested in volunteering to help plan and run the conference, please complete this short Volunteer Interest Form.

2020 Environmental Education Alliance Annual Conference
March 6-8, 2020  |  Villas by the Sea  |  Jekyll Island, Georgia

Picture
Are you creating an environmentally focused culture within your community? What have you found to be the best ways to make environmental education more accessible? How should environmental educators engage with partners and stakeholders in their communities? Those were some of the questions on the minds of attendees at EEA's 2020 Annual Conference. The conference offered educators connections, tools, learning opportunities, and strategies needed to understand and implement effective environmental education within their classrooms, schools, organizations, and communities. The theme for the 2020 conference was, “Splashing into EEA: Making Waves within Your Community.” More than 120 attendees shared information on how they, and their schools or organizations, are making an impact in the community and making environmental education more accessible for diverse audiences.

2020 CONFERENCE SESSIONS & ACTIVITIES

Day 1 - Participants had the opportunity to attend either a workshop, field trip, or both. There were several full- and half-day workshops to choose from, with something for everyone. We took advantage of being on the beautiful Georgia coast by organizing field trips exploring Jekyll Island and ended the day at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center with networking, snacks, and drinks.

Day 2 - Participants chose from five sessions focused on engaging their communities to make a positive impact. We heard from keynote speaker Cathy Sakas, a professional interpretive naturalist who specializes in ocean and coastal environments and leads educational wilderness expeditions throughout the southeastern U.S., Caribbean, and Central America. She also produced the two-time Emmy Award-winning nature documentary series for Georgia Public Television, "Coastal Naturalist" and  hosted the multiple Telly-award winning nature series for Turner South, "The Natural South." We held our awards luncheon, social, and silent auction.

Day 3 - Participants learned about the Marine Debris Citizen Science project created in 2012 by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and funded by the Southeast Atlantic Marine Debris Initiative, part of NOAA's Marine Debris Program. We picked up litter and entered data about the items into a marine debris tracker (this app is not restricted to beach cleanups and is something you can use for free in your community to help find solutions to pollution problems). Our conference attendees helped leave Jekyll Island cleaner than we found it!
