HHMI | Biointeractive
The HHMI collection brings the power of real science stories into tens of thousands of high school and undergraduate life science classrooms. Real-world stories anchor a variety of classroom resources based on peer-reviewed science. From data-rich activities and case studies to high-quality videos and interactive media, HHMI resources connect students to big ideas in biology, promote engagement in science practices, and instill awe and wonder. Biointeractive resources are free and include hands-on activities. Here are samples. |
Data Nuggets
These free, engaging classroom activities were co-designed by scientists and teachers to bring research and authentic data into the classroom. Data Nuggets feature a scientist role model and the story of what inspired their research. In a Data Nugget activity, students are guided through the entire process of science. Because of their simplicity and flexibility, Data Nuggets can be used throughout the school year and across grades K-16. Data Nuggets are free; answer keys available to school email address only. The National Center for Case Study Teaching
NCCSTS curated a collection of 830+ exemplary, peer-reviewed science cases (the Buffalo Case Studies) for use at the undergraduate, graduate, and high school level. For example, here is The Modern Caveman’s Dilemma: Who Should Eat the Paleo Diet case and corresponding teaching notes. The Case Studies Collection is free through National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), though teaching notes and answer keys cost $30 annually OR a year of free access is traded for submitting a case study or serving as a peer-reviewer. Here are some samples. |
Science Outside
These case studies in environmental science were created based on the idea that all of us are intrinsically curious, and young people in particular care deeply about the world in which they live. Science Outside is a valiant effort to highlight how science is relevant to the world and student’s lives, and to give students opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios. The case studies engage students through connections with the animals, plants, and landscape they encounter outdoors. Science Outside case studies cost $10 - $15 each, though the following three are free when using the promo code at checkout). Science Outside also publishes a lab manual for Environmental Science @ ~$200 and a small collection of "break out room" adventures. |
Create Your Own Case StudiesDoes your class participate in community science projects? Do students collect data related to pollinator observations, water quality monitoring, soil tests, food waste diversion to compost, energy conservation, or other ongoing environmental projects? Consider creating a case study to share with future classes or other schools. Here is some guidance from the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) on how to create effective case studies.
