SAGES Project

The SAGES Project

The SAGES Project (Science for All Georgians through Environmental Stewardship) was created by Captain Planet Foundation's CPF Institute in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education. Working with exemplary science teachers throughout the state, the CPF Institute created a curriculum that approaches every state science standard through an environmental lens.

SAGES lessons are phenomenon-based "three dimensional science," as described by "A Framework for K-12 Education".  Students are engaged in doing authentic, real-world science rather than deriving content knowledge from textbooks, lectures, or worksheets. SAGES offers the environment as a context for learning the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Science (GSES), regardless of whether the unit is related to life science, physics, earth or space science. The SAGES Lesson Framework is a teacher-friendly "5-E lesson format" modified to include Eliciting Student Questions and Environmental Stewardship, along with the traditional Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Evaluation.

This work was made possible by generous contributions from the R. Howard Dobbs Jr. Foundation,
the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, the Voya Foundation, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region IV.

SAGES Lesson Sampler
This searchable database of SAGES lesson frameworks includes a selection for most grade levels. Featured lesson components are provided as stand-alone "grab and go" activities. Some SAGES lessons are collected in Canvas by grade level and include a self-paced, online professional learning course for educators.
